The Irishman Marsala Cask Single Malt is a Aer Rianta International exclusive, which means you will only be finding these expressions in Dublin and Cork Airports!
The Irishman is a part of the Walsh Whiskey portfolio, which also boasts the amazing Writers Tears brand. Many of you will already know, that I am a huge Irishman Founders Reserve fan, in my opinion, it is one of the most flavoursome and affordable premium blends on the market at the moment. Which meant I was very excited to get my teeth into the latest release from Walsh Whiskey, the Marsala Cask Finish.
The Irishman Marsala Cask Finished Single Malt is a limited edition cask finish that is exclusive to Aer Rianta, who operate the alcohol retail units at Cork and Dublin airports.
The whiskey is a non-chill filtered, non-age statement malt that has been finished in marsala hogshead casks for a period of 15 months, which is a seriously decent finish for this Italian fortified wine cask. It is bottled at 46% ABV (92 Proof), and it will retail for a price of €85 duty paid and €72 duty free.
So, what does it taste like? Well, this whiskey is bursting with flavour, which comes through in every aspect of the whiskey; the nose, the palate and the finish.
Colour: Dark Amber.
Nose: This whiskey has a nose that is overflowing with multitudes of different aromas. Upfront there is a huge burst of cinnamon, molasses, dark stewed tart berries, with notes of crème brûlée; vanilla, milk chocolate, caramel and even some raspberry. This is all layered on top of an underlying aroma of dark roasted malt and honey.
Palate: The palate follows the nose’s intensity, with a myriad of flavours. On the fore the spices from the nose are most prevalent, with lots of cinnamon and wood prickle. Burnt sugar, honey, roasted malt can all be found in this vibrant palate.
Finish: This finish is endlessly long. It is full of spice, dark stewed berries, and honeyed malt.
Overall: This whiskey is chocked full of personality and flavour. This is a heavy marsala cask finish and delivers a huge amount of cask influence without drowning out the underlying malt flavours. Walsh Whiskey have achieved a great balance in this whiskey, whilst also delivering a huge amount of flavour. This has 100% taken the crown as my favourite Irishman yet!
